Wooded areas don’t hold large space in the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge (CWR), however, they deserve special attention. For many centuries the juniper sparse forests and the oaks used to be dense forests, which were almost deserted as a result of biotic, abiotic and anthropogenic impacts. Inspite of this, they still go on carrying the history of the centuries. These places are also the main habitat for many other species. A number of currently preserved islets also face the danger of collapse. And the best way to prevent it all is the reduction of irregularity.
Carried out on professional basis, current reforestation activities in the CWR have a continuous character. The initiative is based on the organization of the existent species’ reproduction. It is occurring in several phases: seed gathering, seed processing, seed production, then replanting.
When it comes to the highlighting of the preferred species and areas for the reforestation, the CWR working team cooperates with both local and foreign notable professionals. During the expeditions the professionals have researched the biodiversity and the climatic conditions, which allow carrying out a coordinated approach.
The latest initiative was a nursery establishment, which, supported by the US Forest Service International Programs, started in February 2016. It serves for testing the innovative technologies for the seedlings’ production. The closed root system of the seedlings’ production considered to be the main method of the high quality planting material production. The almond, apple, cherry, plum, pear and wayfaring (Viburnum) trees’ seeds have already been planted in 5000 containers by this technology.
Beside this, some experiments are being made to process the variants of the media in the seed plots. The water-absorbing polymer material called hydrogel is added to the different proportion mixture of peat and perlite.
The measuring devices donated to the FPWCby the US Forest Service International Program allow monitoring the main climatic conditions, which makes the work easier and serves sustainable data collection.
