For four long years, Margaretha, a brown bear, lived in a small cage overlooking Bazmaghbyur Gorge, near a local restaurant. Throughout her confinement, this gentle giant never had the freedom, stimulation, or comfort that bears need to thrive. While a restaurant worker did what they could to care for her, Margaretha’s living conditions were a far cry from what nature intended. Instead of roaming vast landscapes, exploring forests, and foraging freely, she was forced to endure a cramped and unnatural environment. The prolonged captivity took a toll on her overall health and well-being.
Recognizing the urgency of her plight, the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC), in partnership with International Animal Rescue (IAR), stepped in. On October 23, 2024 with support from local authorities, including the police forces and the Ministry of Nature Protection’s Inspection Body, Margaretha was safely rescued and transported to FPWC’s Wildlife Rescue Center.
At the center, Margaretha finally has access to proper nutrition, veterinary care, and a habitat designed to meet her natural needs. She can move freely, engage in species-appropriate behaviors, and begin healing—both physically and emotionally. Although her journey towards full rehabilitation is still underway, each day brings noticeable improvements in her condition.
Your support can help ensure that Margaretha continues down this path of recovery. Donations to FPWC enable our dedicated team to provide her with the specialized care and resources she needs to rediscover a more natural, fulfilling life.
