In a resolute act of compassion and perseverance, the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC), in close coordination with law enforcement agencies and partner organizations, has successfully liberated three brown bears following their prolonged confinement in the Malatia-Sebastia district of Yerevan.
This complex and emotionally charged operation was carried out under arduous circumstances. From early dawn until nightfall, FPWC’s dedicated personnel stood steadfast in the pouring rain on Svachyan Street. Joined by representatives from International Animal Rescue (IAR), environmental authorities, police officers, emergency responders, animal welfare advocates, and members of the press, the collective demonstrated unwavering commitment to the cause of animal protection.
The situation was fraught with tension: the owner of the animals, entrenched within the premises, initially refused to comply with police directives, denying any wrongdoing and barring entry to the property. Only after the acquisition of a court order and several hours of careful negotiation were the rescue teams granted access and able to initiate the operation.
What they discovered was deeply distressing. The male bear, morbidly overweight at an estimated 250–300 kilograms, exhibited extensive dental trauma with most of his teeth broken or severely damaged. One of the two female bears had endured the totality of her existence—born and raised—in the same squalid, constrictive cage, never once experiencing the outside world. The third bear fared no better, having likewise been subjected to years of physical and psychological neglect.
All three animals have now been safely transferred to FPWC’s Wildlife Rescue Center (WRC), where they are receiving immediate medical attention and compassionate rehabilitation. The male bear is scheduled to undergo dental surgery to alleviate his chronic pain. The WRC continues to serve as a vital institution in Armenia’s conservation framework, offering sanctuary and professional care for rescued wildlife with the long-term goal of recovery and, when feasible, reintroduction into their natural habitats.
“Operations such as these are made possible through the steadfast support of our community,” remarked an FPWC representative. “Each act of generosity contributes directly to the preservation of Armenia’s wildlife and reinforces the values of compassion and stewardship.”
