Fat Bear Week at Wildlife Rescue Center: Celebrating Noodle and Sheba

Published on 03/10/2024

As the leaves turn golden and the air grows crisp, we at the FPWC's Wildlife Rescue Center (WRC) are excited to celebrate our very own cubs Noodle and Sheba, magnificent brown bears who have become beloved ambassadors for wildlife conservation in Armenia. Inspired by the spirit of Fat Bear Week—a celebration of bears' preparation for hibernation—we've dedicated this season to highlighting the enrichment activities that keep the cubs as well as other bears at WRC healthy, happy, and ready for the winter months.

Meet Noodle and Sheba: Our Majestic Brown Bears

The cubs Noodle and Sheba arrived at our refuge center after being rescued from unfavorable conditions, and over the recent period, they have blossomed into a symbol of resilience and the importance of wildlife protection. With their thickening fur and robust stature, the bears embody the wild beauty of Armenia's natural heritage.

The Importance of Enrichment

Enrichment is a crucial aspect of animal care, especially for intelligent and active creatures like brown bears. It involves providing stimulating activities that encourage natural behaviors, promote physical health, and enhance mental well-being.

Foraging Challenges

One of the key enrichment activities we provide for our bears involves foraging challenges. By hiding their favorite treats—like berries, nuts, and honey—in puzzle feeders or scattered around their enclosure, we encourage their natural instinct to search and forage for food. This not only keeps the bears physically active but also mentally engaged.

Environmental Enhancements

We have also introduced environmental enrichments to the bears’ habitat. Logs for scratching, pools for swimming, and varied terrain mimic the complexities of their natural environment. The bears  also have a metal feeding and climbing structure that they eagerly explore, strengthening their muscles and agility.

Seasonal Treats and Activities

With autumn upon us, the cubs enjoy seasonal fruits like apples and pumpkins. Carving pumpkins filled with goodies has become a favorite activity—not just for Noodle and Sheba, but for our staff who delight in watching their investigative antics. These seasonal treats provide nutritional variety and celebrate the abundance of the harvest season.
