Bear Rescue from Silikyan District: A Joint Effort Success

Published on 04/03/2025

The Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) recently conducted another successful rescue operation, providing hope to yet another animal in Armenia. This rescue mission took place in the Silikyan district of Yerevan, where an endangered bear was found confined in severe conditions at a car repair facility.

The bear had been kept for an extended period in a cramped, dark cage under severely unsuitable conditions. It suffered from injuries to its paws from continuous movement on rough concrete, broken teeth affecting its ability to eat properly, and significant difficulties moving on an icy floor.

Representatives from Armenia’s animal welfare community actively participated in the rescue, expressing deep concern for the bear's wellbeing. Through these collaborative efforts, the bear was safely rescued and transferred to FPWC's Wildlife Rescue Center.

Currently, the bear is under veterinary supervision at the Wildlife Rescue Center, receiving the necessary medical care. Specialists are now working on a comprehensive rehabilitation program tailored specifically to ensure the bear’s full recovery and potential return to the wild.

This operation highlights the critical importance of community involvement and immediate reporting of any cases involving illegal captivity or mistreatment of wildlife.

FPWC expresses its sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia for their valuable assistance and to our strategic partner, International Animal Rescue (IAR), for their ongoing support of our rescue missions.
